TDR Type Steel Truss Bridge Full highway load-carrying capability


The basic bridge consists of three main parts. The bridge's strength is provided by the panels on the sides. The panels are 10-foot-long (3.0 m), 5-foot-high (1.5 m), cross-braced rectangles that each weigh 570 pounds (260 kg), and can be lifted by six men. The panel was constructed of welded steel. The top and bottom chord of each panel had interlocking male and female lugs into which engineers could inset panel connecting pins.


The floor of the bridge consists of a number of 19-foot-wide (5.8 m) transoms that run across the bridge, with 10-foot-long (3.0 m) stringers running between them on the bottom, forming a square.[7] Transoms rest on the lower chord of the panels, and clamps hold them together. Stringers are placed on top of the completed structural frame, and wood planking is placed on top of the stringers to provide a roadbed. Ribands bolt the planking to the stringers. Later in the war, the wooden planking was covered by steel plates, which were more resistant to the damage caused by tank tracks.

Each unit constructed in this fashion creates a single 10-foot-long (3.0 m) section of bridge, with a 12-foot-wide (3.7 m) roadbed. After one section is complete it is typically pushed forward over rollers on the bridgehead, and another section built behind it. The two are then connected together with pins pounded into holes in the corners of the panels.


1.1.1 Materials
a. Strength:
i. Major structural elements (e.g. truss panel chords, connecting lugs, cross girders): steel with minimum yield stress 460 N/mm² (e.g. steel equivalent to BS 4360Weldable Structural Steel, Grade 55C or EN 10113 Grade S460N or equivalent international standard)
ii. All other major structural elements (not in the above point i.):steel with minimum yield stress 355 N/mm² (e.g. steel equivalent to BS 4360 Weldable Structural Steel, Grade 50A or to EN 10025 Grade S355JR or equivalent international standard)
iii. Minor components and structural elements: steel with minimum yield stress 275 N/mm² (e.g. steel equivalent to BS 4360 Weldable Structural Steel of Grade 43A or to EN 10025 Grade S275JR or equivalent international standard)
iv. Pins: minimum yield stress of 800 N/mm² (e.g. steel equivalent to BS 970 Wrought Steel of Grade 709 M40 or equivalent international standard)
v. Bolts, screws and nuts shall be in accordance with BS 3692 ISO Metric Bolts or any equivalent international code
vi. Spring circlips shall be of steel equivalent to BS 5216 Wire for Mechanical Springs or equivalent international standard
vii. Materials in accordance with either the following British Standards or Europe Specifications, or to their equivalents within other International Standards and shall have mechanical properties suitable for the purpose for which they will be used
